Key Insight: For such a wide-reaching study, it was key that top-of-funnel digital recruitment didn’t just speak to the target patient population but friends, family, and loved ones. That increased our audience population but also gave the opportunity for others to comment and tag those that might be eligible, which increases engagement and the likelihood of organic impressions and shares on social media platforms.

The challenge

Responsive Enrollment: COVID-19 registries are essential for understanding long-term impacts of the virus. They provide real-world data on symptoms, treatments, and recovery, helping researchers track trends and develop interventions. These registries support ongoing studies, improving public health strategies and advancing care for millions affected by the pandemic. A sponsor asked 1nHealth to recruit 1,000 adult patients, but the I/E criteria was tough—they had to have contracted COVID-19 within the past seven days and they couldn’t have been hospitalized.

The strategy

Extensive Outreach: 1nHealth advertised on Meta platforms and search engine platforms such as Google to be as wide-reaching as possible. This was a registry for a current infectious disease that could affect anyone, regardless of geography, ethnicity, and age. But with wide-reaching digital recruitment comes a challenge—a high number of submissions that needed to be screened.

Very Clear Screening Materials
We made sure the submission landing page and further screening steps were as intuitive as possible with very clear, everyday language.
Targeting Family & Friends
From our experience with similar studies dealing with infectious diseases, we knew we needed to target family and friends as well. They would be eager to tag users they thought were eligible and could benefit from this registry, increasing the number of organic shares and impressions of our digital recruitment ads.

The solution

Automated Screening: In addition to submission landing pages that provided clear qualification messaging, 1nHealth deployed automated digital tools to send brief, automated surveys via SMS and email to collect initial data (such as demographics, vaccination status, exposure history). Automating this step reduces manual workload and allows quick filtering of eligible participants.

The results

Accelerated Enrollment: From the very first day of active recruitment, we were ahead of the projected enrollment schedule—finishing with 1,000 adult registrants just 23 days.
