What is DMR?

DMR stands for duodenal mucosal resurfacing and is a minimally invasive outpatient endoscopic procedure that takes less than an hour to be carried out. The procedure works by removing the excess of the inner layer of the duodenum, which is the part of the small intestine just after the stomach. Similar to an upper GI endoscopy, the procedure can be performed under deep sedation and does not require implanted devices. There is little to no pain experienced, and a normal diet can be resumed within 10-14 days following the procedure. The procedure has shown promising results in reducing or eliminating the need for insulin injections. Screening visits, the procedure, and all study-related care will be provided at no cost.

What Will I Have to Do?

Initial qualifications

Fill out the questionnaire above to do the basic qualification assessment.

Screening and Preparation

If you meet the basic qualifications, you’ll be notified via email or text about your next steps for the screening and preparation period which will take 6-7 weeks. During this time, it will be determined if the study is right for you.

PROCEDURE AND FOLLOW-UP

Participants that move on to the next step are randomized and then receive either the DMR or sham procedure. The follow-up period is 48 weeks. After the follow-up period, all participants that had the sham procedure will be offered the DMR procedure if they are willing, and it is clinically beneficial to them and will have an additional 48-week follow-up period

Frequently asked questions

Those interested in participating will have to pass the initial screener, as well as complete a screening and preparation period of 6-7 weeks. After this period, participants will be randomized into those receiving the DMR procedure and those receiving the sham procedure and will have additional monitoring for follow-up. Those that received the sham procedure will be able to then receive the DMR procedure if they choose to after the initial procedure’s follow-up period is complete.

This procedure is intended for those with Type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by insulin. This non-drug, one-time procedure works by removing a thickened excess layer from inside the duodenum, which is followed by the regeneration of the normal layer. This enables better use of the body’s own natural insulin and thereby helps avoid the need for insulin injections in the future. Coupled with continued healthy diet and exercise it is ideal for anyone for whom additional daily medications and injections can be a burden. The procedure has shown improvements in blood sugar as well as improvements in liver fat.
