Major Depressive Disorder
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability globally, affecting an estimated 264 million people.
Characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and impaired daily functioning, MDD significantly impacts quality of life. Its multifactorial etiology involves genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors, including neurotransmitter imbalances, inflammation, and stress.
Risk factors include a family history of depression, trauma, and chronic medical conditions. Despite available treatments like antidepressants and psychotherapy, many patients do not achieve adequate symptom relief.
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, including manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes.
Affecting approximately 1–2% of the global population, BD has significant genetic and environmental components. The disorder typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood and often results in significant functional impairment.
During manic phases, individuals may experience elevated mood, impulsivity, and impaired judgment, while depressive episodes involve sadness, fatigue, and hopelessness. Current treatments include mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and psychotherapy.
Post-Partum Depression
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and serious mood disorder affecting approximately 10–20% of women following childbirth, with varying degrees of severity.
Symptoms include persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, sleep disturbances, and difficulty bonding with the baby, often leading to significant impairment in daily functioning.
The pathophysiology of PPD is multifactorial, involving hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, psychological stress, and social factors. While it is distinct from the “baby blues,” which are typically short-lived, PPD requires clinical intervention.
